Boxing Day December 27th 2006
Bloxwich Hockey Club Presidents XI 3  v. the Chairman’s XI 4

This year saw the playing of what has been a traditional match played by the club on Boxing Day each year. The origins of the tradition are lost in the mists of time but for reasons of weather and unavailability of a pitch the match has not taken place for the last three years.

22 stalwarts took to the pitch, some looking a little the worse for wear, some looking a little long in the tooth. Amongst them was Roy Wright who will be celebrating his 80th Birthday next year and, as the eldest member of Bloxwich Hockey Club, is still playing!
The game got off to a brisk start and in no time at all, the score was 3 – 0 to the Chairman’s side as a direct result of a hat trick from the Chairman himself, Mike O’Brien. David Cole redressed the balance just before half time with a characteristic goal, first moving to the goalkeeper’s right and then slotting the ball neatly past him on the left. 3 – 1

Half time necessitated some changing around between the teams and, as a result, some balance was restored by an Adam O’Brien short corner fired like a rocket low into the goal and also a goal from Pete Allen making the President’s score up to 3. But with a goal from Stephanie Dean on the Chairman’s side, a final result of 4 -3 was a close finish.

In spite of a cold morning, all the players were grateful for the support of friends and relatives from the touch line and in the bar back at the club after the game!
